The Electrical-Deals Must Read ‘TV Buying Guide’

Firstly let me apologise, It has been quiet on the Electrical-Deals blog recently.  Getting the rush of Xmas out of the way and the January sales window, it has been good to see that sales are still staying strong now into April.  Hopefully they will continue as there are some big events coming up this year, events that we will hopefully be able to run some special promotions on, but more on that another time.

This post is to bring to you our just published ‘Electrical-Deals – TV Buying Guide’  This is a purpose built guide by a member of our team to help you with your TV buying decision.  The guide includes all sorts of useful information from the pros and cons of different TV types to explanations of different functions and features that are often found on specification sheets.

To see our guide all you have to do is click on the cover below.  This will then open the PDF file in your web browser, you can save this to your desktop once it has opened so you are able to view it at your leisure, by just clicking the ‘save a copy’ button on the top left of the screen.

Electrical-Deals TV Buying Guide cover

We hope you find the TV Buying Guide both useful and informative, and we would also love any feedback regarding this.  Is there anything you think we have missed out, are some parts not clear enough or would you like another ‘Guide’ on a different product type as well?

Please leave any comments or suggestions, in the comment section below.

Thanks

Update on Fraudulent Nano and iPhone Websites – They are NOT Electrical-Deals

As requested by a few people now here is an update to the fraudulent website nano5sale.com and it’s sister sites ipodnano5gsale.com, ipodnanoshops.com, applenano5th.com and ipodsnanonsale.com. If you haven’t heard the story regarding these fraudulent websites already you can read the first post here! with all of the comments from people who had spotted or not spotted the dodgy sites and the stress and time it has caused many in trying to get their money back.

So where are we up to? Well after having such an incredible response from so many people after posting the article here and on the business blog for electrical-deals (The company the above fraudulent websites were/are pretending to be) I had easily over 100 emails from people who had read the post just in time or had unfortunately read it a little too late.

For those who were quick enough and paid by Credit Card, they were able to issue a charge-back and stop the payment, which allowed them to get refunded quite quickly. Others were less fortunate and were told to wait for a delivery. About 2-3 weeks after payment some buyers had started to receive deliveries of their “iPhones” only to discover that they were fake iPhone copies from China. These people are now trying to get their money back the harder way as they have returns and shipping etc to contend with.

I don’t want to put links up of these sites as I have no intention of driving traffic to them, below is a screen shot of the homepages of the fraudulent websites above. As you can see they all look incredibly similar and because of this i encourage you to forward this to people you know and avoid these websites or sites with similar names and looks as the ones below.

ipodnanoshopsipodnanonsaleFor a link to a post I wrote last week on the research you can do to avoid getting sucked in by these type of sites then please click here to see it.

Hopefully by doing this we can stop more people getting mis-sold what they think is going to be a genuine Apple iPhone.

As always I welcome comments and will reply to each one, same if your after any advice or have any questions I am always happy to help.

Best Wishes

Dave

Special Notice from Electrical-Deals (Beware www.nano5sale.com)

We felt it best to bring your attention   we believe to be a fraudulent website which is wrongfully using our name to portray itself as a legitimate business.  Also by doing this it will hopefully get word out a little bit quicker on the web.

The website is www.nano5sale.com This website is nothing to do with us at all and we would strongly suggest not transacting on it.

***UPDATE*** (23rd October 2011)  [I have just noticed the exact same site but on a different web address, it is again a very suspect site and run by the same person/people who run Nano5sale.  This site os called http://www.ipodsnanonsale.com/ . Once again, please do not transact on this website either!]

Out of interest we did a web WhoIs search which stated that the website was registered in China by a Chinese company yet the address they give on the website is a New York address…to be specific it is a parking garage in New York, which doesn’t seem a likely place for a genuine apple reseller.

We know the deals they have online do appear to be really good.  so much so we would say “Too Good To Be True” and for that reason alone they probably are.

The email addresses on the website do not work as we have attempted to contact them regarding using our name illegally on their site and as yet have had no response.  We are currently trying other avenues to get hold of those in charge of the site.

notice from electrotecSo please be aware that www.nano5sale.com is nothing to do with Electrotec/ServiceCare or electrical-deals.co.uk and we would strongly recommend not “buying” anything from the website.

Bye for now

Geek Guide: Glossary Of Terms Part 1 – TV’s

We realise that sometimes when you come to buy a new piece of technology that it is really easy to get lost with some of the lingo used in this day and age, especially if you’re not part of the Technorati or ‘geek squad’.  SO Electrical-Deals have decided to create a glossary of terms to tell you exactly what those funny terms in the specification mean.

Aspect Ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the screen size in a ratio format.  The format is measured by two numbers that represent the width and the height, represented by W:H.  TV’s these days are 16:9 (widescreen) the older style big backed TV’s (CRT’s) were a 4:3 ratio.

Brightness: If you see a specification for brightness this refers to funnily enough how bright the screen can go, or more specifically, the power of the tv to display a bright picture.  This has nothing to do with the internal settings of the TV, all TV’s can have brightness adjusted through the menu’s.  Brightness is measured is cdM/2 which is Candela per squared metre.  The higher number the brighter the set.  A normal brightness is around the 400-500 cd/M2

TV's Brightness

Contrast Ratio: This is now usually referred to as ‘Dynamic Contrast Ratio’ and similarly to aspect ratio this is represented by two numbers set out in a ratio format.  The contrast ratio tells you the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black on the screen at anyone time.  So a ratio of 50,000:1 is telling you, the TV can display a White 50,000 times brighter than the darkest black.  The higher the number the better, but this shouldnt be a deal clincher for any TV purchase.  Different manufacturers measure this differently so what might be a 20,000:1 on a LG might be a 50,000:1 on a Sony etc

Digital (Freeview): In the UK I’m sure everyone has heard of the ‘digital switchover’ and this has been the cause of much confusion for many across the UK.  Digital and Freeview are the same thing with regards to a TV.  If a TV is digital then it has Freeview built-in, and if the TV is advertised as Freeview then it had a digital tuner.  Every TV that you can buy these days hs Freeview built-in.

DLNA: DLNA stands for the Digital Living Network Alliance.  This means as long as you have a home network and you have several products that are DLNA certified then you can do lots of clever things by getting the units to talk with each other, involving listening to music and watching films.  For a full detailed explanation of what the DLNA can do please visit there website here.

EPG: EPG stands for Electronic Programme Guide.  This is the menu within your TV which lets you know the TV schedule usually about 7 or 8 days in advance.

HD: HD stands for High Definition and there are two main types of HD.  HD Ready TV’s mean that the resolution outputs over 720p but under 1080p.  The most common HD ready resolution is 1366 x 768p.  Full HD is the maximum resolution possible which is 1920 x 1080p.  It is worth noting to get a Full HD picture you will need either a Blu-Ray Player or a Next Gen Games Console.  Even Virgin and Sky HD do not output at 1080p.

Internet TV: This is a misleading one.  Internet TV doesn’t mean you can browse Facebook and complete Google searches like you can on your computer.  Internet TV is very limited as to what you can actually watch.  Most Internet TV’s are compatible with just YouTube and BBC iPlayer. You can connect usually via wired ethernet cable however if you want to connect wirelessly you will need to buy a manufacturer model WiFi dongle)

3D TV

3D: 3D is to a degree self-explanatory a 3D tv allows you to watch 3D content usually through a 3D Blu-Ray player or Sky 3D channel.  With the aid of some ultra stylish glasses this will allow you to see a 3D picture.  What is lesser know is there are two types of 3D tv’s.  Those with 2D conversion and those without.  Those with the converter will allow you to ‘simulate 3D from any normal 2D source, those without the converter can only watch 3D content that was designed to be shown in 3D.

If you feel we have missed something out leave us a comment below and we will write you a definition for any of those confusing terms.  Coming soon we will have one for Laptops and Computers.

Kind Regards

-The Electrical-Deals Team

As well as having the lastest technology built in, the TV is also one of the best looking, if not the best, TV available to date, with its Slim design and near ‘bezel-free’ frame at only 5mm wide. The Samsung Smart TV’s have opened a whole world of possibilities, all available through your TV.

Samsung Smart TV UE55D8000

Samsung Smart TV Features.

You can now access your favourite online activities using Samsung Apps, which is the Worlds first TV App store. You are able to customise the Smart TV with a huge range of applications such as  Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LoveFilm, BBC iPlayer and many, many more.

The Search All feature on the Smart TVs allows you to search for the programmes you want to watch, even while having another Live TV show on in the back ground.

Your Video is a customised video recommendation Service which picks up on your viewing history and recommends TV shows and Movie clips to suit your tastes.

Samsung’s Social TV feature allows you to stay in touch with Friends and Family at the same time as watching Live TV. You can Blog and Chat on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google Talk. You can also connect with friends & family via Skype – simply connect a TV camera, sit-back and relax. The only down fall of this feature is that its availability is dependant on your region, but I’m sure this won’t be for long with the way technology is progressing.

You can now even surf the net on your TV. With a dedicated web browser optimised with Samsung Smart TV, you can browse, shop, connect and network all while laid back in the comfort of your Living-room.

These are just some of the feature Smart TV’s offer, there is so much more that the Samsung Smart TV’s offer. There is already a range of Models available boasting all boasting high TV specifications. Newer Models have LED screens with 3D capability and with most retailers the Samsung 3D glasses are included. There is already a wide range of Samsung Smart TV models available, it wouldn’t be possible to go in to detail on each Specification.

Verdict

At this time this the Samsung Smart TV’s are the ultimate centre piece for Home Entertainment. Putting the hefty price tag to one side, with their wide range of features, applications and high specification, no TV comes close to competing with it…….for now. This really is the perfect unit for you if you like nothing more than to just chill out in your front room and have all the entertainment you can handle controlled with 1 remote, you literally don’t even have to think for yourself, the Smart TV ‘Your Video’ feature will reccommend what to watch based on your viewing history, and to top it all of the physical look of the TV is amazing, a perfect fit for a modern living room. This TV is not going to be for everyone, we know that for alot of people a TV is there to be watched from time to time and ‘doesn’t need’ all the additional features the Samsung Smart TV’s offer, however, you do have to admire this as a remarkable bit of innovation.

Why You Should Buy A Refurbished TV

Lets Set The Record Straight

The term refurbished is becoming more and more common these days but chances are you might not know exactly what it means, or that someone has mis-informed you as to what they are.  Common questions I get asked regarding refurbs are along the lines of: ‘Is it someone’s broken television?’ or  ‘Is a refurbished TV a “used” or “secondhand” TV… like a faulty one from eBay?’ …. No! They are nothing like that.  Continue reading to find out what a refurbished TV is and why you would be daft not to at least consider buying one.

If Not…Why Not?

So unless you have been living under a rock for the past few months, chances are you will know about the big Royal occasion coming up.  Thats right, it’s the big wedding of Bill and Kate…ooops sorry I mean Prince William and soon to be Princess Catherine.

Don’t Miss Out

So with the event of the year looming the question is, are you ready for it?  With an expected audience of over 2 Billion people… Just under a third of the Worlds Population and with it guaranteed to be a prestigious event not to be missed are you going to make the most of it?  For the first time ever a Royal Wedding will have full TV coverage in High Definition.  Therefore if you’re not already set up for watching High Definition content now is the perfect opportunity to join the HD revolution.

All you need is a HD Ready or Full HD TV aswell as a HD source, this could either be a Sky/Virgin HD box, a FreeviewHD/FreesatHD Box or a TV with FreeviewHD or Freesat HD built-in.

Incase your still not convinced, il let the Corgis have they’re say…You cant argue with Corgis…

http://www.youtube.com/user/FreeviewVideos#p/a/u/1/KInvdKF5-0Y

And Finally…

The great thing is that Freeview/Freesat HD technology has been plummeting in price so this doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and once you have paid for it once, that’s it…theres no subscriptions to pay monthly or annually, ahhhhh unlimited HD programming

On the flip side, if you have the source and you just want an updated TV with either FreeviewHD built-in or just upgrading to a Full HD compatibility then the prices of TV’s are at their lowest ever, so hopefully you cannot afford to miss out on HD Content.

Is 3D TV All It’s Cracked Up To Be?

Love It or Hate It?

The introduction of 3D TV has been a revolutionary one there is no denying it, but for the first time in a few years, it is a TV technology which has truly divided the opinion of the masses.  In one corner you have the ‘Fan Boi’s’ and in the other you have the technophobes.  So as a so-called ‘expert’ in the field of Consumer Electronics with a specialist subject on TV’s lets look at why there is such a difference of opinion.

The Underwhelmed

Now no doubt you will have met one of these people, on the web there called ‘trolls’ but in real life they are the glass half empty types.  They have been to the cinema and watched Avatar about 5 times Continue reading
